AFA - April 2008 - Normandy Trip: Day 1 - The Guns

The coastline of Normandy was well fortified with German gun emplacements, each sunken in the ground with six feet thick reinforced concrete walls and roof. Each armed with cannon that would fire 12 miles. In the pictures the rounded looking structures were the guns, the square looking structure was an observation point that serviced multiple guns.
In the picture with the kids, in the background you see a field of canola. There were fields every where we went beautifully blooming with yellow flowers. Canola is a winter crop used to make cooking oil. This area of France was spectacular. Impossible to imagine the horrors that took place there 60 years ago.
