AFA - March 2008 #7 Neuschwanstein Castle

After Berlin we drove south to the southeast corner of the country, only three miles from the Austrian border, to an area called Bavaria. It once was its own country, but now is just an area of Germany. It is a really charming area, with picturesque, colorful buildings. Here we visited two beautiful castles, one built by the father, one by the son overlooking the father's castle. The second (pictured above), called Neuschwanstein castle (pronounced "kass-sul"), was the inspiration for the Disney Sleeping Beauty castle and Cinderella castles. Interestingly, the guy (King Ludwig II) who built it never actually lived in it. He died just before it was completed under "mysterious circumstances." Supposedly, he'd spent so much money building his dream castle that the country was seriously in debt to the tune of about $13million, and this is 100 years ago when that was real money. He was supposedly drowned before he spent even more. Sadly you are not allowed to take pictures of the inside, which was pretty spectacular., but never completely finished. In the castle they have drawings of his next dream castle, called Falkenstein, which was even more elaborate. They stopped him just in time.
